Community Service

To see, to serve,to take up responsibility

In order to instill in the minds of the growing generation a sense of social responsibility, community service programmes are organized in the school — giving children the opportunity to encounter social realities face to face.

Community service is not an add-on at St. Joseph’s — it is a discipline. Children are given the opportunity to encounter the village, the slums, the struggles of the labour class, the economically weaker sections of society, the physically and socially handicapped, the elderly, the mentally challenged, the poor and marginalized — and in meeting them, to discover what it means to care.

Whom our students meet

Eight social realities

The Village

Rural life and its rhythms — the ground from which most of our students come.

The Slums

Urban poverty and the resilience of communities living on the margins.

The Labour Class

The struggles of workers whose hands build what others take for granted.

The Economically Weaker

Families for whom every day is a negotiation with scarcity.

The Physically & Socially Handicapped

Citizens whose challenges are compounded by a world not built for them.

The Elderly

Those in the evening of life, who deserve care, company, and dignity.

The Mentally Challenged

Citizens whose needs call for patience, understanding, and sustained attention.

The Poor & Marginalized

Those pushed to the edges of society — the ones the Gospel calls us to serve first.

The purpose

“And thus preparing the students to take up the responsibilities of administering the programmes of the nation.”

Encounter becomes empathy. Empathy becomes responsibility. Responsibility becomes the quiet competence of a citizen who knows how to serve — and knows whom to serve.
